Waste heat recovery system

About half of the energy out of the fuel will be lost as waste heat through the exhaust pipe and cooling water. To increase the energy efficiency of your vessel, we have been specializing in the utilisation of waste heat. For example, the waste heat which disappears through the exhaust pipe and cooling water from your installed internal combustion engines, can be partly recovered and being converted into electricity or mechanical energy.

Waste heat recovery from your installed internal combustion engines

The increasing urgency in CO2-emission reduction, ship operating costs reduction and the newly adapted IMO EEDI rules, calls for measures that ensure optimal utilisation of the fuel used for engines on board ships.

Main engine exhaust gas energy is by far the most attractive among the waste heat sources of a ship, because of the magnitude heat flow and high temperature. It is possible to generate a mechanical or electrical output of the engine power by utilising the exhaust gas and cooling water energy losses by using a waste heat recovery system.

We are talking about the efficiency PACK from our German partner Orcan Energy AG. This waste heat recovery system produces electrical or mechanical energy (to support the powertrain) by using the waste heat from the exhaust gas and cooling water, but also from residual steam or thermal oil. By using this technology you can yearly reduce your carbon footprint (till 300 tonnes of CO2), save on your fuel costs (6-9%) and improve the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) or Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) from your Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).

The efficiency PACK is modified for vessels with an installed total engine power of about 500 kW to 5 MW (and more). Because of the modularity of the system, more PACKS can be combined for larger waste heat sources. The maximum output per efficiency PACK is 100 kW, but if you combine it with more units (operating as a single entity) you could have access to 500 kW. The efficiency PACK is designed for all maritime sectors including seagoing market, short sea shipping, offshore, inland waterway, navy, fast ferries, dredging, fishing and yachting.

Green Award inland waterway

Are you in possession of one or more inland waterway vessels? Then we will inform you about the following. In 2011, the Green Award certificate for inland shipping is launched. Certification is voluntary and provides several advantages and incentives, for example improvement of the company’s image and discounts on harbour duties. Across the world, ships and shipping companies are certified by the Green Award for their quality, safety and environmental performance.

Green Award has its own set of requirements that go well beyond the statutory requirements. Only inland waterway vessels that meet the requirements of Green Award are eligible for the Green Award certificate. For example, you will get a lot of rewarding points if you have installed a SCR catalyst or diesel particulate filter (DPF) on board. Also for the efficiency PACK rewarding points can be granted. The waste heat recovery system can be added to the “additional list” of requirements.

Rental model

There is also the possible to rent the waste heat recovery system (efficiency PACK) from Orcan Energy. In this way, you don’t need to invest and don’t have to deal with payback periods, but you’ll get the benefits of a static rent that is lower than the saving on fuel costs. This creates a positive cash flow from day one and at the same time you can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Energy Investment Allowance (EIA)

We would like to bring the Energy Investment Allowance (EIA) to your attention. By investing in a waste heat recovery system based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), you can invest in waste heat recovery under favourable fiscal conditions. On average the EIA gives you a 13.5% tax advantage for 2018.

Complete exhaust gas system

Together with our German partner Fischer Abgastechnik we bring the waste heat recovery system (efficiency PACK) from Orcan Energy to the next level. Because of the collaboration between both companies, we are able to deliver an exhaust gas system where all different systems fit together seamlessly and are integrated with one another.

Thanks to the excellent compatibility between the characteristics and integration of Fischer’s SCR catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust silencer, spark arrester, suspension elements, heat exchanger and Orcan’s waste heat recovery system (efficiency PACK), we are able to advise you a silent (45 dB(A)), clean (IMO Tier III and EU Stage V ready) and fuel saving (6-9%) exhaust gas system based on your wishes and requirements.
