Orcan Energy AG

Orcan Energy AG is a leading, fast-growing and ambitious start-up operating in waste heat recovery systems, named efficiency PACKS.

The company, established in Munich (Germany) in 2008, has its roots at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) where the founders in 2004 started with the first Research and Development (R&D) of their innovative waste heat recovery system. Orcan Energy started with developing the technology for agricultural applications (biogas plants), but expanded to other markets over the years. Since 2016, the company is expanding their target markets by developing a waste heat recovery system also for the maritime industry.

Nowadays Orcan Energy has 70 commercial references across Europe (in total 500 thousand hours cumulated runtime), 65 high qualified employees and 140 patents registered worldwide. The first reference dates back to 2011.

With the cost-effective efficiency PACK developed for the maritime industry, you have the possibility to generate electricity or mechanical energy (to support the powertrain) by using the waste heat from the exhaust gas, cooling water, residual steam or thermal oil. By using this technology you can yearly reduce your carbon footprint (till 300 tonnes of CO2), save on your fuel costs (6-9%) and improve the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) or Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) from your Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).

The waste heat recovery system, based on the Organic Rankine Cycle’s principle, is flexible employable. For example, the waste heat recovery system is modified for vessels with an installed total engine power of about 500 kW to 5 MW (and more). And although 100 kW is the maximum output per efficiency PACK, for larger waste heat sources more PACKS can be combined because of the modularity of the system. Then the maximum output could be 500 kW. The efficiency PACK is designed for all maritime sectors including seagoing market, short sea shipping, offshore, inland waterway, navy, fast ferries, dredging, fishing and yachting.
